my father. yet another unpleasant display of ageing cursed with ignorance... anyway...
my goal was not to expose all his crinkles and furrows, but to make this look like an old newspaper print...
I used a 3 f-stops underexposed shot (basically black) desaturated it and leveled it to 'normal' brightness. You won't get a better grain anywhere else :]
Then I used the LITHPRINT ACTION: Hard Boiled with slightly modified parameters

This is [to date] my favorite portrait on DeviantArt. There is so much behind the face, but you did a great job letting just enough of it surface. The grain is beautiful . . . it almost looks like a relief, but maybe I'm just staring at it too long! I can't wait to see more of your work with the
